Algorithms that deliberately expose digital users to more diverse content, including subject views that do not necessarily conform or align with their own.
Algorithms that deliberately expose digital users to more diverse content, including subject views that do not necessarily conform or align with their own.

A conceptual technology that analyzes user interactions, connections, keywords, and hashtags to map out their filter bubbles and then cross-link the data with their polarized counterparts. This solution could be added as an external plug-in, an algorithm update from the platform, or featured in a completely new platform focused on bursting filter bubbles. It could also be applied to music and entertainment, thus showing users new artists, genres, or meaningful documentaries and movies on streaming platforms, thus enabling citizens to think about issues or solutions.

This solution is an effort to solve the increasingly polarized nature of online environments. Computer scientists are designing these “bubble bursting” algorithms to make sure that internet users can access content that does not necessarily conform with their own personal views.

Gender Equality

Challenges

  • Can expose users to sensitive content that can operate as a trigger to unleash harmful experiences.

  • Could show individuals content related to destructive ideologies, such as sexist memes or pornographic videos.

Opportunities

  • Help authorities act on sexist and prejudicial content exposure.

  • It could potentially diversify opinions on sensitive topics such as gender and sexuality.

  • It could shift conservative or patriarchal viewpoints to more progressive approaches.

  • By eliminating echo chambers, people can make more informed decisions in their private lives.
