A network of traffic lights powered with sensors, machine vision, and IoT communication protocols designed to improve traffic interactions between vehicles and pedestrians. Smart traffic lights work by extracting data from sensors, which in turn feed the traffic lights with information regarding pedestrians' speed while crossing the street as well as the daily amount of vehicles circulating at a particular intersection.
With the help of machine learning algorithms, smart lights can understand traffic volume while making real-time changes. Also, approaching bikes and vehicles mounted with GPS and wireless connectivity can send signals to traffic lights, prewarning the system in preparation for shutting down a crossroad as the vehicles approach. Furthermore, emergency vehicles mounted with GPS and wireless connectivity could prewarn the system to allow them to pass. This technological solution helps improve traffic flows and prevent accidents produced by poorly communicated traffic modes.
